![]() ![]() Originally from Ghana, Gifty’s mother immigrated to Alabama and dedicated her life to faith and providing for her two children. Gifty is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at the Standard University School of Medicine studying reward-seeking behaviour in mice and its correlation with depression and addiction through neural circuits. Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi is an emotionally gripping story about faith, addiction, depression, loss and so much more. Transcendent Kingdom is a journey to say the least and although the ending felt very lacklustre, it was reading Gifty’s thoughts on people, events, and her beliefs that truly make this journey worthwhile. There is something about this novel that feels so fresh in its flow but also heart-wrenching and reflective in the narration. This book was given as a gift, so I was not prepared or familiar with Gyasi’s writing. I have absolutely no idea where to begin with this novel, very rarely do I find a novel that I can’t put down or that challenges me emotionally. ![]()
